BENI Might Be the Droid You’ve Been Looking For
Star Wars has convinced us for decades that every adventure is better with a droid by your side.
As someone who’s built a fully functioning R2 astromech unit, I’m always drawn to robots that feel like they could roll right out of the Star Wars universe. Beni instantly gave me that feeling. It’s a compact all-terrain camera robot that’s currently on Kickstarter, and it’s basically your own personal droid that follows you around capturing your adventures. If you’ve ever wished your astromech could tag along on a hike instead of repairing your X-wing, this is probably the closest thing you’ll find.
Beni records in 4K and is loaded with smart features including self-recovery, HybridFlow stabilization, obstacle dodging, motion tracking, and Pilot Mode for manual control. It can automatically follow you from the front, side, behind, or even circle around you while capturing footage, then auto-edit everything into polished highlight videos. There’s even a set of interchangeable “hats” available in different colors to give your little droid some personality. One of my favorite touches is the magnetic controller, which snaps onto a wristband so it’s always within easy reach while you’re on the move. The Kickstarter campaign expects to begin shipping this October, and while it may not have a holographic projector or a bad motivator to complain about, it’s probably the closest most of us will ever get to owning a real astromech.
